Research & Development Advisor

Dr. Alexandros Antoniadis Karnavas

Alexandros Antoniadis Karnavas joins Unity in Philia as Research & Development advisor, with deep interest in Science Outreach & Communication. As a Doctor in Astrophysics, he brings profound academic experience, solid skills in data analysis, as well as culture of innovation. His unifying view about Science and Philosophy aims to bridge their gap and explore their common ground.

Alexandros was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, where he obtained his Bachelor Degree in Physics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He then moved to Sweden, where he received his Master Degree in Astronomy from Stockholm University. In the view of his inner need to further explore the Cosmos, he continued his postgraduate studies and completed his Doctoral Degree in Astronomy at University of Porto, Portugal. As a PhD researcher, he was awarded three research fellowships by the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences of Portugal, conducting research in the field of stars and exoplanetary systems. Specifically, his scientific work has contributed to the parameter determination of red-dwarf stars, which are prominent candidates for hosting earth-like exoplanets, by developing innovative methods via spectroscopic analysis and machine learning.

He deems that the study and research of Natural Sciences broadens one’s mental horizons, since understanding the ways the Universe works is a primal existential need of humans. Throughout human existence, it is evident that the comprehension of the external world through Science must align and integrate with the comprehension of the internal world through Philosophy. This synthesis enables individuals to fully appreciate the space journey on our planet which we call Life, finding meaningful engagement in relation to themselves and to others.
