Consciousness’ Journey to the Transcendent: Tuning the Finite to Infinity” by Dr Vassilis Adrahtas is a book that combines literature and art, philosophy and spirituality. It has managed to do so through a most creative collaboration with an innovative group of visual artists, six women who make up the Art of Life Collective, inspired by the insights of Yoga Science. The latter goes back to the renowned Indian mystic thinker Sri Aurobindo, a contemporary of the great modern Greek writer, intellectual and poet Nikos Kazantzakis. And it is precisely the dialogue between these two $gures – a dialogue that never took place but could quite naturally be imagined – that the artbook undertakes to articulate through the hierophanic experiences embodied in the artworks of the Art of Life Collective.
The book moves from “Divine Origin” and “The Multiplicity of the One”, in search of “Rooting in Light” and “Spirit-in-Matter”, aiming ultimately to reveal “Integral Action” and “Art of Life”. At the same time, though, the spiritual journey throughout its 180 pages constitutes a cross-cultural dialogue between the Hellenic and the Indian lifeworld, a dialogue that occupies three distinct levels: one between Kazantzakis and Aurobindo; another one between the artworks of the Art of Life Collective and the two sages; and a final one between Dr Adrahtas as the author with everyone else. In a sense, “Consciousness’ Journey to the Transcendent” is an experiment in hybrid forms of creativity that span times, cultures and genres. And it is up to you to judge the merits of this experiment yourselves!
