The Photographs of George Devine Treloar is a unique book documenting a community regeneration program that took place between October 1922 and April 1924. The hero of this program was Colonel George Devine Treloar in his capacity as the League of Nations Commissioner for Refugees in north-eastern Greece. Tens of thousands of destitute survivors of the Genocides of the Hellenes, Armenians and Assyrians were saved from starvation, exposure and disease thanks to the work of Treloar’s Mission.

Treloar took photographs of the genocide survivors and the League of Nations’ work on their behalf. These photographs documented the refugees’ experiences from arrival to the regeneration of their lives in remarkable ways. However, the Treloar photographs were a deeply personal record of his time in Greece, and they were never meant for publication.

Nevertheless, after a century David W. G. Treloar and Dr Panayiotis Diamadis have prepared them to be shared with the world. Genocide to Regeneration is the result of 14 years of work, mostly rigorously researching the historical circumstances of the times, selecting appropriate extracts from the vast League Archives, and identifying the people and places featured in the photographs.

Genocide to Regeneration is a tribute to George Devine Treloar and the League of Nations Mission he led, the genocide survivors who are recorded in the photographs, to the Australians and other who donated so generously to enable the Mission to do its work, and to the Treloar family who protected the images for a century.
